Dubai: The Roads and Transport Authority has awarded a major contract for Phase I of the Dubai Walk Master Plan, focusing on enhancing pedestrian infrastructure in the historic Al Ras area.
The project includes the development of the Historic Al Ras Walkway, featuring 12 km of pedestrian paths and 5 km of cycling tracks. It also covers the restoration of 10 artistic spaces in collaboration with the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, with contributions from Emirati and local artists.
Mattar Al Tayer said the Pedestrian Master Plan is strengthening Dubai’s position as a global leader in walkable infrastructure. He noted that the initiative supports the Dubai Urban Plan 2040 by enabling access to over 80 percent of essential services within a 20-minute journey.
The project is also aligned with the Quality of Life Strategy 2033, aiming to improve community wellbeing and pedestrian safety while enhancing connectivity between districts.
As part of the broader Dubai Walk Master Plan, more than 6,000 km of walkways will be developed across 160 areas by 2040. Plans also include 110 pedestrian bridges and underpasses, with a goal to increase walking and soft mobility trips from 16 percent in 2025 to 25 percent by 2040.
The Al Ras Walkway will connect key heritage landmarks such as Al Ahmadiya School, Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House, Al Ras Public Library, Al Fahidi Fort, and Al Shindagha Historic District. It will also be linked to 11 public transport stations to improve accessibility.
The design includes shaded walkways, seating areas, green spaces, and clear wayfinding systems, all integrated with the district’s heritage character. Advanced lighting and artistic features have also been added to highlight the cultural identity of the area.
