Researchers at University of Cambridge have developed what they describe as the world’s first vaccine whose key component was designed entirely by artificial intelligence and subsequently tested in human trials.<\/p>
The experimental vaccine is intended to provide protection against a broad range of coronaviruses, including existing COVID-19 variants as well as animal viruses that could potentially trigger future pandemics.<\/p>
Unlike conventional vaccines that are typically developed against a specific virus strain, the new approach uses artificial intelligence to analyze genetic information from numerous coronaviruses and identify common features that can be targeted by the immune system.<\/p>
Scientists used AI to create a “super-antigen” \u2014 the critical part of a vaccine that teaches the body’s immune system how to recognize and fight infections. The goal is to generate protection across an entire family of viruses, even if they mutate or new strains emerge.<\/p>
According to Jonathan Heeney, the technology aims to move ahead of future outbreaks rather than constantly updating vaccines after new variants appear. Researchers believe this could significantly improve global preparedness for emerging infectious diseases.<\/p>
Although the project remains in its early stages, the research team is already applying the same AI-driven approach to develop broader vaccines against influenza and Ebola.<\/p>
