Abu Dhabi: The UAE has expanded the international recognition of its driving licences, allowing Emirati citizens to drive or exchange their UAE driving licence in 34 countries, making travel, work and long-term residence abroad more convenient.<\/p>
The Ministry of Interior announced the update through its Murkhoos initiative, which aims to simplify international driving licence recognition and exchange procedures.<\/p>
According to the ministry, UAE citizens who relocate to any of the 34 recognised destinations can exchange their UAE driving licence for a local one, subject to each country’s regulations. In 33 of these countries, Emiratis visiting as tourists can also drive using their valid UAE driving licence without obtaining a separate driving permit. South Korea currently allows licence exchange only for residents.<\/p>
The ministry also highlighted reciprocal arrangements for foreign licence holders. Citizens from 53 countries who become UAE residents can convert their home country’s driving licence into a UAE licence without taking a driving test, provided they meet the required conditions. Visitors from 52 of these countries can also drive in the UAE using their valid foreign licences.<\/p>

A valid driving licence issued by an approved country.
A valid UAE residence visa.
Meeting the legal minimum driving age.
Passing an eye examination.
Surrendering the original licence where required under reciprocal agreements.<\/p>
