With around 37 million date palms across the country, discarded palm leaves and date pits are being explored as valuable raw materials for furniture, wood products and bioplastics.

The process involves collecting discarded palm leaves, grinding them and pressing the material under controlled temperatures to produce durable boards. These boards can then be used to make furniture such as tables and chairs for cafes and restaurants. Researchers are also studying the use of powdered palm leaves to develop bioplastics that could serve as alternatives to single-use plastic containers and bottles.

Palm waste is also finding applications beyond consumer products. Researchers at Saudi Aramco have developed materials using date palm seeds that can help prevent drilling fluids from leaking during oil and gas extraction. These projects are part of broader efforts to reduce waste, create new economic opportunities from agricultural by-products and develop more sustainable materials.

Saudi Arabia is developing new ways to turn waste from its date palm industry into useful and environmentally friendly products.
