The Himalayas are approaching a potential tipping point as glaciers lose mass at an accelerating rate, threatening water security and the livelihoods of millions across the region, according to a study released this month.<\/p>
The findings come after the collapse of a Himalayan glacier along the Nepal-Tibet border in late August triggered cascading landslides and flash floods in valleys below. At least 1,300 people have been confirmed dead and more than 5,300 remain missing across Nepal and China\u2019s Tibet region, according to the report.<\/p>
As glaciers retreat, they are leaving behind unstable glacial lakes held back by loose rock and ice. These lakes sit above valleys where millions of people live, increasing the potential risk of sudden flooding and other hazards.<\/p>
The study was produced by sustainability advisory firm Systemiq in collaboration with the Integrated Mountain Initiative, the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development and India\u2019s G.B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment, Reuters reported.<\/p>
The report found that Himalayan glacier mass loss has accelerated in recent decades, while only 21 glaciers are currently monitored on the ground out of an estimated 40,000 glaciers across the Hindu Kush-Himalaya region. The mountain system stretches across eight countries, from Afghanistan to Myanmar.<\/p>
In India alone, nearly 200 glacial lakes have been identified as high risk, including 56 classified as very high risk, potentially exposing millions of people living downstream.<\/p>
The region is also approaching what scientists describe as \u201cpeak water\u201d \u2014 the point at which river flows stop increasing because of glacier melt and begin to decline. Such a shift could have major implications for water availability and security across communities that depend on Himalayan rivers.<\/p>
The Himalayan region supports more than 20% of India\u2019s GDP and forms a critical part of the country\u2019s economic infrastructure, with hundreds of millions of people dependent on its water resources and ecosystems.<\/p>
Despite covering around 18% of India\u2019s land area, the Himalayan region accounts for roughly 35% of the country\u2019s natural disasters, highlighting its vulnerability to climate-related and geological risks.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
