The increase in maritime traffic is significant for Kuwait’s oil sector because the Strait remains a key route for transporting the country’s crude to international markets.

Sheikh Nawaf stated that KPC is currently meeting its crude oil supply commitments to customers and that all of Kuwait’s refineries remain operational.

He also noted that the company’s planned projects remain on track, while work on Kuwait’s oil pipeline plans is progressing. Routes through Saudi Arabia and the UAE are being considered as potential alternatives, while Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) is examining additional options.

Kuwait currently has an oil production capacity of approximately 3 million barrels per day, according to Sheikh Nawaf. The difference between current output and overall capacity reflects the operational impact of the disruption affecting the movement of oil through the region.

Ensuring sufficient tanker capacity remains another priority for Kuwait as it works to maintain the distribution of its crude oil. The gradual increase in tanker traffic through Hormuz could provide greater flexibility for the country’s oil exports, although the waterway remains strategically important.

The developments also highlight Kuwait’s efforts to maintain supplies to international customers while keeping its refining system operational and exploring alternative transportation routes.

Kuwait is currently producing around 2 million barrels of crude oil per day, equivalent to about 75 percent of its pre-war production, as an increasing number of oil tankers resume passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
