Protests over rising living costs and concerns about public services turned violent in several Italian cities, with demonstrators clashing with police in Milan and Bologna. In Milan, protesters threw stones and other objects near the city’s Gothic cathedral, prompting police to use tear gas to disperse the crowds.

The unrest disrupted daily life in central Milan. Shops closed their shutters, tourists left the area and the Duomo metro station was temporarily shut during the clashes. Several people were reported injured, and arrests were made. In Bologna, police used water cannons to disperse crowds and arrested seven people, according to local media reports.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned the violence, saying people had the right to demonstrate but not to turn cities into battlegrounds. Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala said the reasons behind the protests were understandable, but attacks on law enforcement and damage to the city were unjustifiable.

The demonstrations began peacefully, with protesters raising concerns about living costs and wider social issues, including wars. However, some groups broke away from the march, throwing objects at police and setting fire to barricades. Reports also described looting and damage to property in central Milan.

The unrest coincided with demonstrations in neighboring France on October 17, where protesters also took to the streets over rising costs and concerns about public services. The developments reflect growing public discontent in parts of Europe, although the protests in the different countries were separate demonstrations.
