New statistics from Kuwait's Ministry of Justice show that 2,666 divorces involving Kuwaiti couples who married in previous years were recorded in 2025. Additional data from the first seven months of the year details 222 divorces after cohabitation and a higher number of 287 divorces by Kuwaiti women before the consummation of marriage. Despite this, marriage rates remain robust, with 5,993 Kuwaiti-national marriages recorded in the same period.
In response to these trends, the Ministry of Justice is implementing an improved mechanism to strengthen marital reconciliation centers. These centers are staffed by specialists, including sociologists, family counselors, and religious scholars, who work directly with couples to mediate disputes and offer guidance before conflicts lead to divorce.
This initiative is part of a broader, inter-agency effort to preserve family cohesion. The government is focusing on raising awareness among newlyweds about critical social issues, such as the impact of drug abuse and the negative consequences of divorce, to address the underlying factors contributing to the rising divorce rate.
