The UAE’s National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) has issued a fog alert for several internal and coastal areas, warning of significantly reduced visibility between midnight and 10:00 AM on January 4, 2026. The advisory highlights risks for early morning commuters, especially on roads connecting inland and coastal regions, where fog formation is common during cooler, humid nights with light winds.
In response, Abu Dhabi Police have activated the variable speed limit system, reducing the maximum speed to 80 km/h on the Abu Dhabi–Al Ain Road between Al Khaznah Bridge and Al Faya Bridge. Motorists are urged to drive cautiously, maintain safe distances, use low-beam headlights, and follow updated traffic signs and instructions during periods of poor visibility.
The NCM recommends that drivers avoid using hazard lights while moving, as this can mislead other road users, and refrain from sudden lane changes or braking. Ensuring vehicle lights are functional and staying attentive to changing conditions are key to preventing accidents in fog. These measures are part of broader efforts to enhance road safety during the winter months, when fog and mist frequently affect travel across the UAE.
Authorities continue to monitor conditions and will adjust traffic controls as needed. Commuters are advised to plan for potential delays, check official weather and police updates before traveling, and prioritize safety over speed during early morning hours when visibility is most compromised.
