Dubai Expands E-Scooter Permit Application to RTA and Dubai Now Apps

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has expanded access to its e-scooter riding permit service, making it available through the RTA Dubai app and Dubai Now app in addition to its website. This digital integration allows residents to apply for, obtain, and manage their permits entirely online—without visiting service centers—supporting RTA’s push toward seamless digital governance and Dubai’s vision of becoming the world’s smartest city.

To acquire a permit, users must complete an online theory test covering e-scooter rules, safety requirements, and riding basics. Upon passing, they receive an electronic permit authorizing them to ride in RTA-designated zones. The streamlined process is part of a broader regulatory framework aimed at promoting safe and responsible micro-mobility while reducing congestion and accidents.

Ahmed Hassan Mahboob, CEO of Corporate Support Services at RTA, emphasized that all e-scooter users must obtain permits before riding in approved areas and adhere to traffic laws to ensure public safety. The permit system is designed to raise awareness of local regulations, including speed limits, helmet use, and designated lanes, thereby protecting both riders and pedestrians.

The expansion to multiple official channels underscores RTA’s commitment to user convenience and digital accessibility. By offering flexible, paperless options, the authority aims to encourage compliance while supporting sustainable urban mobility. Future enhancements may include real-time permit verification and integration with e-scooter rental platforms to further streamline the rider experience.
