Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado presented her Nobel Peace Prize medal to U.S. President Donald Trump during a private White House meeting on Thursday. Machado called the gesture a “recognition for his unique commitment with our freedom,” following the recent U.S. seizure of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
Trump described the act as a “wonderful gesture of mutual respect.” The Nobel Committee has previously stated that a Nobel Prize cannot be transferred or shared, clarifying that the title of laureate remains with the original recipient. The meeting marks Machado’s first in-person interaction with Trump, who has not formally endorsed her as Venezuela’s leader despite her claimed election victory in 2024.
