Iran has proposed a plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz without immediately addressing its nuclear programme, following discussions with mediators in Islamabad.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi suggested that nuclear negotiations could be taken up only after the current conflict ends. However, the proposal has been met with resistance from United States leadership.
US President Donald Trump reportedly expressed dissatisfaction, insisting that Iran’s nuclear programme must be addressed at the outset of any agreement. Washington has made it clear that lifting sanctions on Iranian ports will depend on concrete progress in nuclear negotiations.
Officials in the US argue that delaying nuclear discussions could weaken their negotiating position, while Iran maintains that easing maritime restrictions should come first to stabilise the region.
The disagreement highlights ongoing tensions as diplomatic efforts continue to reopen Hormuz and reduce the risk of further escalation in the region.
