KUWAIT AMENDS REAL ESTATE AND RESIDENCY LAWS

Kuwait City: The ban on foreign ownership of real estate investment units is expected to be amended, sources said. The aim is to mitigate the losses of 300 million Kuwaiti dinars per unit caused by the Covid 19 epidemic. Sources said that the residency law for expatriates may also be amended for this purpose. It is hoped that with the introduction of these amendments, a major recovery in the real estate sector will be achieved.

There have been several government studies with international participation on strengthening the position of investment units in the real estate sector, which is facing a severe crisis. The urgent need to establish a public real estate authority has become a necessity. The real estate sector has historically been the second largest investment option available to both local and foreign investors.

Sources said the amendments to the Expatriate Residency Act should be legislated and attract investors. The amendments would help secure the investment real estate sector in the years to come.
