Kuwait is turning to artificial intelligence to detect and monitor rare migratory birds passing through the country. The initiative is being developed by the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research using advanced sound-recognition technology.
Researchers have created programs that identify bird species through their unique calls and integrate the data into AI systems. By analysing recorded sound files, scientists can confirm the presence of migratory birds that arrive in Kuwait during the spring and autumn seasons. The project is currently in the research phase, with officials saying confirmed sightings of rare species will be announced once verified.
The study also includes new research at the Kabd reserve, where sound sensors and AI tools are being used to examine how management practices affect bird diversity. Preliminary data from the project is expected within the next two months.
Experts say shifting from traditional visual birdwatching to sound-based AI monitoring could significantly improve environmental research in Kuwait and help track biodiversity more accurately.
