The Environment Public Authority has confirmed that a shark recently spotted near the coast of Bnaider is part of a natural seasonal phenomenon and not a cause for concern.
The authority said it reviewed a video circulating on social media showing the shark near the shoreline and immediately dispatched technical teams to monitor the situation.
According to EPA spokesperson Sheikha Al-Ibrahim, the shark is believed to be a Blacktip Shark, a species known to appear seasonally in Kuwaiti territorial waters.
Officials explained that shark sightings typically increase during May and June due to the abundance of food sources and the breeding season of smaller fish. These conditions often attract sharks closer to coastal areas such as Bnaider, the Al-Zour Bridge area and waters near the Al-Zour Refinery.
The authority noted that the return of such marine species is a positive sign of improving environmental conditions and reflects the health and balance of Kuwait’s marine ecosystem.
EPA officials added that sightings of species not recorded in the area for several years indicate better water quality and the availability of suitable habitats for marine life.
While stressing that the shark’s presence is a normal environmental occurrence, the authority urged sea users to exercise caution and follow marine safety guidelines.
Citizens and residents have been advised not to approach, chase or attempt to interact with large marine animals and to report similar sightings to the relevant authorities.
The Environment Public Authority said it will continue monitoring marine wildlife in coordination with concerned agencies to ensure both public safety and the protection of Kuwait’s marine biodiversity.
