Dubai to Nationalize Mosque Roles; 154 Nationals Appointed as Imams, Preachers

The Dubai Department of Islamic Affairs has launched an initiative to nationalize key mosque roles, appointing 154 Emiratis as Imams, preachers (Khatibs), and muezzins. The move aims to align religious guidance with local cultural and contemporary contexts.

Officials stated that empowering national preachers will help sermons better combine religious authenticity with an understanding of modern realities, strengthening community ties and improving the impact of Friday sermons. The decision marks a shift in a sector where expatriates, including many from South Asia, have historically served in these positions.
