Open source data and AI fuel new intelligence race amid Iran conflict

Reports indicate that Chinese private companies have been using Artificial Intelligence and open source data to monitor US military movements during the Iran conflict, raising concerns in Washington.

Despite China officially maintaining distance from the conflict, these firms are reportedly developing and marketing intelligence tools capable of analysing publicly available data such as satellite imagery, flight tracking information, and maritime shipping records.

Analysts say online platforms are increasingly sharing detailed insights into US military deployments, including aircraft carrier movements, aircraft positioning, and activity at military bases. This reflects the rapid growth of a new intelligence ecosystem driven by accessible data and advanced analytics.

Some of these companies are believed to have links to China’s military structure, aligning with the country’s civil military integration strategy, which connects private sector innovation with state objectives.

Using AI, these tools claim to provide near real time monitoring of troop movements, analyse aircraft communications, and detect large scale deployments. Experts note that capabilities once limited to governments are now becoming available to private entities.

This shift allows countries to gain strategic advantages without direct involvement in conflict. While China continues to call for ceasefire and peace talks officially, reports suggest its private sector is leveraging technology to expand its strategic influence in the region.
