Putin steps in after Islamabad talks fail, offers to mediate rising Iran–US tensions

Russian President Vladimir Putin has moved to intervene diplomatically as tensions between Iran and the United States continue to escalate. Following the collapse of high-stakes talks in Islamabad, Putin held a phone conversation with Iran’s leadership and formally offered Russia’s role as a mediator to ease the crisis.

The Islamabad negotiations, closely watched worldwide, ended without agreement, triggering fresh concerns of conflict. US Vice President J. D. Vance attributed the breakdown to Iran’s unwillingness to fully abandon its nuclear ambitions. In response, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf criticised the US, questioning its commitment to genuine peace efforts.

Russia’s diplomatic outreach comes shortly after the US delegation departed Islamabad. Putin emphasised the need for a political and negotiated solution, positioning Moscow as a key player in de-escalation efforts in the region.

Meanwhile, tensions have intensified in the Strait of Hormuz, where attempted US naval operations reportedly met resistance from Iran. Regional dynamics have further complicated the situation, with Pakistan deploying military forces to Saudi Arabia under a defence pact, and Israel vowing to continue military actions against Iran and allied groups.

Global observers warn that unless diplomatic efforts, including Russia’s mediation, succeed, the region could move closer to a wider conflict.
