French cinema icon Nathalie Baye dies at 77, tributes pour in

Renowned French actress Nathalie Baye has passed away at the age of 77, according to media reports. Her family confirmed she died at her home in Paris following a diagnosis of Lewy body dementia.

French President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute, describing her as an actress who shaped generations of audiences with her performances. Over a career spanning more than five decades, Baye appeared in around 80 films and became one of France’s most celebrated screen talents.

She rose to prominence with her role in Day for Night directed by François Truffaut and went on to win four César Awards, France’s top film honour. Her notable works include collaborations with Jean-Luc Godard and award-winning performances in films such as La Balance and Une étrange affaire.

Baye also gained international recognition with roles in films like Catch Me If You Can, directed by Steven Spielberg. In later years, she appeared in popular productions including Call My Agent! and the Downton Abbey film series.

Beyond her acting career, she was known for supporting causes such as climate action and assisted dying reforms. Her passing marks the end of an era in French cinema, with tributes highlighting her lasting influence and legacy.
