Meta to track employee activity to train AI, raising privacy concerns

Meta Platforms plans to monitor employee activity, including keystrokes and mouse clicks, as part of a new initiative to improve its artificial intelligence systems. The tool, known internally as the Model Capability Initiative, will run on company devices and internal applications to collect real-world usage data.

The company says the data will be used solely to train AI models that can better understand how people interact with computers, helping develop advanced digital assistants capable of handling everyday tasks. According to CEO Mark Zuckerberg, such data is essential for building more effective AI tools, with safeguards in place to protect sensitive information.

However, the move has sparked concern among employees, with some describing the tracking as intrusive and expressing fears about increased surveillance and potential job cuts. Reports indicate that Meta has already reduced hiring and carried out layoffs, while significantly increasing investment in AI development.

The company is expected to spend heavily on AI projects in the coming years as it aims to position itself at the forefront of the technology. The data collected through this initiative is intended to support future AI models emerging from its research divisions.
