E-scooter safety has come under renewed scrutiny after new figures revealed a sharp increase in serious accidents involving the popular mode of transport across the UAE.
An analysis of traffic data from the UAE Ministry of Interior by RoadSafetyUAE found that major e-scooter accidents rose by 97 per cent in 2025 compared with the previous year.
The wider micro-mobility sector, which includes e-scooters, motorcycles, bicycles and electric bikes, recorded a 45 per cent increase in major accidents. This was significantly higher than the 23 per cent rise recorded across all vehicle categories.
The findings were supported by a nationwide survey commissioned by Al Wathba Insurance and RoadSafetyUAE, which gathered responses from 1,010 residents across the country.
According to the survey, 93 per cent of respondents said they regularly observe unsafe or reckless behaviour among e-scooter riders, while 90 per cent reported feeling unsafe because of such behaviour.
Helmet usage emerged as a major concern, with 90 per cent of participants saying they frequently see riders operating e-scooters without protective headgear.
Road safety experts say the findings highlight the need for stronger awareness campaigns, improved compliance with safety regulations and enhanced infrastructure to accommodate the growing use of micro-mobility transport across the UAE.
