US Senate Approves War Powers Measure Challenging Trump’s Iran Policy

Washington, D.C.: The Republican-controlled United States Senate has approved a war powers measure calling on President Donald Trump to halt military action against Iran or seek congressional authorization before continuing operations.

The resolution passed the Senate by a vote of 50-48, with several Republicans joining Democrats in support. The measure had already been approved earlier by the United States House of Representatives, marking the first time since the 1973 War Powers Resolution that both chambers have passed a concurrent resolution directing a president to end a military action.

Despite its significance, the resolution does not carry the force of law and will not be sent to President Trump for approval or veto. Instead, it serves as an expression of Congress’s position and growing concern about the ongoing conflict with Iran.

President Trump strongly criticized the vote, describing it as “poorly timed and meaningless.” He argued that the measure complicates ongoing diplomatic and military efforts, while insisting that his administration remains committed to achieving its objectives.

The vote comes amid increasing debate within Trump’s own Republican Party over the conflict and concerns about its economic impact, including higher fuel prices. Several Republican lawmakers have recently broken ranks with the administration on key foreign policy and spending issues.

Supporters of the resolution say it reflects Congress’s constitutional role in authorizing prolonged military action and signals public concern over the continuation of the conflict. The White House, however, maintains that the current ceasefire arrangements have altered the legal and military context surrounding the war.
