India is celebrating its 80th Independence Day today, marking eight decades since the country broke free from British colonial rule. August 15 is a reminder of the historic moment when India stepped into an era of freedom and sovereignty, while also reflecting on the hopes, struggles and responsibilities that shaped the nation. The historic words of Jawaharlal Nehru on the eve of Independence continue to symbolise the aspirations of a newly free India.
India’s freedom was achieved through decades of sacrifice and resistance. From the Champaran Satyagraha, Khilafat and Non-Cooperation movements to the Dandi March and Quit India Movement, countless freedom fighters endured hardship and imprisonment in the struggle against colonial rule. After Independence, the country faced major challenges, including the wounds of Partition and the Emergency. Despite these difficult chapters, India gradually moved forward on the path of development.
Over the decades, India has made significant progress in science and technology, space research, the economy and defence. As the country celebrates its achievements, there is also a need to remain aware of the challenges ahead. Building a sustainable, self-reliant and developed India should remain a shared goal, with unity, cooperation and social harmony guiding the country’s journey towards growth.
