Soaked Walnuts vs Dry Walnuts: Know the Health Benefits

Walnuts are widely consumed for their nutritional benefits, particularly their contribution to brain and heart health. While some people prefer soaking walnuts overnight before eating them, others eat them straight from the packet. Soaking is often believed to improve nutrient absorption and make walnuts easier to digest. However, does this extra step actually make a nutritional difference?

Nutrients that support brain health

Walnuts contain alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a plant-based omega-3 fatty acid, along with antioxidants, polyphenols and vitamin E. These nutrients can contribute to overall health, including cardiovascular health. Walnuts can be part of a balanced diet that supports healthy aging, but eating them alone is not guaranteed to improve memory or intelligence.

Are soaked walnuts better?

Soaking walnuts overnight softens them and may make them easier to chew. However, there is no strong scientific evidence that soaked walnuts provide greater brain-health benefits than unsoaked walnuts. Both forms retain many of their beneficial nutrients, so soaking is a matter of personal preference rather than a nutritional requirement.

Does soaking affect nutrient absorption?

Some people soak nuts to reduce phytates, naturally occurring compounds that can affect the absorption of certain minerals. However, research published in Food Chemistry in 2020 found that soaking walnuts did not significantly reduce their phytate content. Some water-soluble compounds and minerals may also move into the soaking water, depending on the soaking conditions. Therefore, soaking should not automatically be considered a way to increase nutrient absorption.

Walnuts and heart health

Walnuts contain unsaturated fats, including ALA, that can support cardiovascular health when included in a balanced diet. Replacing foods high in saturated fats with nuts may help improve cholesterol levels. However, walnuts alone cannot prevent heart disease or replace prescribed treatment. Regular physical activity, a balanced diet and other healthy habits remain important.

How many walnuts can you eat daily?

Around 25 to 30 grams of walnuts, roughly a small handful, can fit into many adults’ daily diets. The appropriate amount varies according to individual nutritional needs and overall calorie intake. Although walnuts contain beneficial fats, they are energy-dense, so portion sizes matter.

Choose plain, unsalted walnuts for everyday consumption. If you prefer soaking them, use clean drinking water, refrigerate them during an overnight soak and consume them promptly. Whether soaked or eaten dry, walnuts can be a nutritious addition to a varied, balanced diet.
