A KUWAITI INNOVATION TURNS MASKS INTO WATER PURIFICATION MATERIALS

Kuwait City: It seems that this has become possible, as Professor of Chemistry at Kuwait University Dr. Ali Bumajdad revealed a new Kuwaiti research that transforms single-use medical masks into environmentally friendly nanomaterials used to purify polluted water.Boumejdad indicated that the research he prepared with his colleague in the department, Dr. Muhammad Chakrakhan, has been accepted for publication in the prestigious Journal of Engineering and Chemical Industry. He pointed out that with the Corona crisis and the increase in the use of medical masks, scientists estimate the quantities of masks used at two hundred billion masks per month globally, which necessitated devising a way to benefit from these materials in a way that is beneficial to the environment, by using them to improve the characteristics of catalytic carbon and make it more capable of removing pollutants from water.Boumejdad indicated that the innovative method of research uses organic plant residues (sedge plant) in the preparation of carbon materials used to purify polluted water, noting that other research techniques also contribute to preserving the environment, as old methods have been replaced by removing chemicals, by washing them with water. Only (heating and cooling water), which added another environmental dimension to the study. Boumejdad thanked the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences for its support for this research, which he is working on, and is currently under his supervision, two researchers, a doctoral student and a master's student. He also thanked Kuwait University for providing research tools and equipment for characterizing carbon materials.
