India to Build World's Longest Hyperloop Test Track

  • 28/02/2025

India is making strides in futuristic transportation by planning to build the world's longest Hyperloop test track. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav confirmed the development, highlighting that the project follows the successful testing of a 422-meter-long track at IIT Madras, developed in collaboration with Indian Railways. Hyperloop technology promises to achieve speeds of up to 1,100 kmph, offering an efficient and cost-effective alternative to conventional transport. The upcoming facility, spanning 40-50 km, will be a key step in assessing the commercial feasibility of this ultra-fast transport system.

The 422-meter test track, located at IIT Madras’ Discovery Campus, is India's first Hyperloop testing facility. This initiative is part of a broader global effort to develop a transport network that utilizes air-lifted capsules within low-pressure tubes, significantly reducing travel time. India has been at the forefront of these advancements, with Indian Railways, L&T Constructions, Avishkar Hyperloop, and IIT Madras working together on the project.

In a major milestone, Tutor Hyperloop, a deep-tech startup from IIT Madras, successfully completed the country's first commercial-intent Hyperloop pod test. This breakthrough means that future Hyperloop travel could enable journeys of 300-400 km in just 30 minutes, making it faster than air travel. For example, a trip from Thiruvananthapuram to Kasaragod, which currently takes several hours, could be completed in just one hour, marking a revolutionary leap in transportation.
