Australia to Launch Free Daily Solar Power Hours in 2026

Australia has announced an innovative "Solar Sharer" program set to launch in 2026, offering households at least three hours of free electricity daily. The initiative, unveiled by Energy Minister Chris Bowen, will first roll out in New South Wales, South Australia, and southeast Queensland before expanding nationwide.

The free power will be available during midday hours when solar generation peaks, leveraging Australia's extensive solar capacity which includes over four million households with rooftop panels. The program aims to reduce energy costs for all residents—whether they own or rent, and regardless of having solar panels—while easing grid strain during evening peak periods.

To participate, households will need a smart meter and must shift high-energy activities like running appliances or charging electric vehicles to the designated midday window. The program supports Australia's broader climate goals of achieving 82% renewable energy by 2030 and reducing emissions by 43% from 2005 levels. Following the announcement, shares of major energy providers AGL Energy and Origin Energy fell by approximately 3%.
