Two climbers have died after falling from New Zealand's highest peak, Aoraki/Mount Cook, in the Southern Alps. The climbers were part of a four-person team attempting to summit the 3,724-meter mountain when the accident occurred. The two surviving climbers were rescued by helicopter after contacting emergency services, while the deceased climbers' bodies remained connected by their climbing harness when discovered.

Authorities are working to recover the bodies from what they describe as a "challenging alpine environment." Mount Cook is known for its difficult terrain featuring large crevasses and unpredictable weather, claiming numerous climbers' lives over the years. According to New Zealand media, one of the deceased was a well-known, internationally recognized mountain guide. This tragedy follows the disappearance of three North American climbers on the same mountain nearly a year ago, highlighting the persistent dangers of climbing New Zealand's highest peak.
