Pakistan and Taliban Forces Clash at Border, Breaking Ceasefire

  • 06/12/2025

Pakistan and Afghanistan's Taliban forces have engaged in renewed border clashes, breaking a fragile ceasefire agreement brokered by Qatar and Turkey less than two months ago. The fighting, which lasted approximately four hours overnight, has resulted in at least four fatalities and multiple injuries on both sides of the 1,600-mile border.

According to local sources, Pakistani forces employed light and heavy artillery while Taliban fighters responded, with civilian homes reportedly struck by mortar fire. The conflict has prompted residents of the Afghan border city Spin Boldak to flee, with footage showing civilians escaping on foot and in vehicles. Both governments have exchanged accusations, with Pakistan claiming "unprovoked firing" by the Taliban and Afghanistan accusing Pakistan of initiating attacks.

These clashes represent ongoing tensions between the neighboring nations, with Pakistan accusing the Taliban government of harboring militant groups responsible for attacks within Pakistan, an allegation Kabul denies. The violence follows recent peace negotiations in Saudi Arabia where both sides had agreed to maintain the ceasefire, though no broader settlement was reached. This marks the most serious border confrontation since the Taliban regained power in 2021.
