Abu Dhabi is accelerating its efforts to become a smarter and more sustainable city with a major new initiative. The Department of Municipality and Transport (DMT) has announced it will deploy 500 autonomous, AI-powered vehicles by the end of the year.
This fleet is projected to reduce carbon emissions by up to 40%, or 1,775 tons. The vehicles will perform a variety of tasks, including street sweeping, beach cleaning, and goods transport. They will be equipped with Internet of Things (IoT) technology for real-time monitoring and high-definition cameras to inspect areas and detect violations or damage.
By automating these services, the initiative not only modernizes public utilities but also enhances operational efficiency. Officials stated that this move will further solidify Abu Dhabi's international standing in smart city technology, following its recent fifth-place ranking in the 2024 IMD Smart City Index.
