Kuwait has made a significant cultural contribution to the major international exhibition “Networks of the Past: Studies Exhibition on India and the Ancient World,” hosted by the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharajah Vastu Sangrahalaya Museum in Mumbai. The Al-Sabah Archaeological Group, under the Dar Al-Athar Al-Islamiyyah, loaned 11 rare artifacts that illustrate ancient cultural exchanges spanning from the Iranian plateau to the Hellenistic world. Kuwait’s participation was led by Dr. Mohammed Al-Jassar, Secretary-General of the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters, who described the collection as a vital part of Kuwait’s cultural diplomacy.
The exhibition is the result of a four-year collaboration between leading global institutions, including the British Museum and museums in Berlin and Zurich. Kuwait’s involvement has drawn notable international acclaim for the artistic and historical value of the Al-Sabah Collection. Sheikha Hessa Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, General Supervisor of Dar Al-Athar Al-Islamiyyah, emphasized that the exhibition honors the vision of her late husband, Sheikh Nasser Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, to share art, heritage, and beauty with the world.
Among the loaned artifacts is a gilded tablet from the Oxus Valley civilization dating to the 4th century BCE, a silver plate with gilded center from the Eastern Hellenistic period, and silver and glass vessels from eastern Iran spanning several centuries. These works highlight the sophisticated craftsmanship of ancient civilizations and offer visitors a rare glimpse into the interconnected cultural networks that shaped human history.
Dr. Al-Jassar praised the Dar Al-Athar Al-Islamiyyah for enabling this cultural exchange and affirmed the National Council’s support for initiatives that promote Kuwait’s heritage on the global stage. Through exhibitions like “Networks of the Past,” Kuwait continues to strengthen its role in international cultural dialogue, showcasing the depth and richness of its archaeological heritage to audiences worldwide.
