UAE Police Issue Driving Advisory for Rain and Fog, Warn of Fines Up to Dh2,000

As the UAE enters a period of unstable weather with rain and fog expected in various regions, police have issued a clear advisory to motorists, highlighting common but dangerous driving mistakes that could lead to hefty fines and black points. Authorities emphasize that during low-visibility conditions, drivers must exercise extra caution and strictly adhere to traffic regulations to ensure safety for all road users.

Several key violations have been specifically flagged. Using a mobile phone to take photos of rain or fog while driving can result in an Dh800 fine and 4 black points, as it diverts attention and significantly increases accident risk. Similarly, driving with hazard lights on in low visibility—except during a breakdown or when stopped—can confuse other drivers and carries a Dh500 fine and 4 black points. Changing lanes without using indicators, which becomes even riskier in poor weather, is subject to a Dh400 fine.

More serious offences such as reckless driving—including speeding, sudden swerving, jumping red lights, or obstructing traffic—can attract severe penalties: a Dh2,000 fine, 23 black points, and a 60-day vehicle impoundment. Police stress that such behavior is especially dangerous during adverse weather, where stopping distances are longer and visibility is reduced.

Authorities are urging all drivers to stay alert, reduce speed, maintain a safe following distance, and use headlights appropriately during rain and fog. They also recommend pulling over in a safe location if conditions become too hazardous. The advisory is part of ongoing efforts to minimize accidents, enhance road safety, and ensure that motorists are aware of both the legal and safety implications of careless driving during the UAE’s winter weather changes.
