Two Killed as Emirates Cargo Plane Skids Off Hong Kong Runway Into Sea

An Emirates cargo plane (flight EK9788) arriving from Dubai skidded off the runway at Hong Kong International Airport early Monday, resulting in the deaths of two ground staff. The aircraft veered off the tarmac, crashed through perimeter fencing, and collided with an airport patrol vehicle, pushing it into the sea. The two people inside the vehicle died, while the four crew members on the Boeing 747 survived.

Airport officials confirmed that the patrol vehicle was on a service road at a safe distance from the runway and did not enter the tarmac. They noted that the plane unexpectedly turned away from the runway toward the sea without sending a distress signal, which is not a standard procedure. The incident caused the aircraft's fuselage to break in half, with a large section submerged in the water.

This marks one of the deadliest aviation incidents in Hong Kong in years and only the second fatal accident since the airport moved to its current location in 1998. Authorities have launched an investigation and are currently searching the sea for the flight data and cockpit voice recorders to determine the cause of the crash. The affected runway remains closed, but the airport's other two runways are operational.
