INCREASE IN NUMBER OF EXPATRIATES RETURNING TO GULF IN SEARCH OF WORK

Thiruvananthapuram: With the easing of the corona crisis, the number of expatriates returning to work in the Gulf region has increased. The change was triggered by the easing of restrictions and the relaxation of visa renewals. It is estimated that more than 5,000 people return every week.

Most of the expatriates return to Saudi Arabia. The renewal of Iqama, the identity document of expatriates, within three months also accelerated the return. Being able to renew your visa from home also helped. Those who do not take the two-dose vaccine do not have direct access to Saudi Arabia. Those who do not get the vaccine arrive in Dubai and leave for Saudi Arabia 15 days after the quarantine.

Expatriates have also started returning to Qatar, Dubai, Oman, Bahrain and Kuwait. The resumption of direct flights to several countries was also a relief. Despite the high fares, most of the flights return with full seats and passengers. There are 162 weekly services from Nedumbassery to the Gulf countries. Services from Karipur are expected to be restored soon.

At the same time, 17,53,897 people from various foreign countries registered with the Jagratha portal and returned home till October 29. Of these, 1,26,883 lost their jobs. Although NORKA has launched various schemes to provide employment to those who have lost their jobs and returned, many have not applied. Many were reluctant because they wanted to return if the situation was favorable. Many Keralites are also taking advantage of the Dubai government's announcement of low-cost employment entrepreneurship visas.
