Kuwait Warns Public: Feeding Birds or Animals in Public Now Costs Up to KD 500 in Fines

Kuwait’s Environment Public Authority (EPA) has issued a stern warning against feeding birds or animals in public spaces, clarifying that such acts violate national environmental laws. Recent social media posts showing individuals discarding food outdoors prompted the authority to reaffirm that this practice is illegal and subject to fines of up to 500 KD (approx. $1,600).

The EPA cited Article 33 of Environmental Protection Law No. 42/2014 (amended by Law No. 99/2015), which prohibits disposing of waste, including food, outside designated containers. Violators risk hefty penalties, as the law aims to curb littering and protect public health, cleanliness, and ecological balance.

Improper food disposal not only attracts pests and strays but also degrades urban aesthetics and poses health risks. The authority emphasized that well-intentioned acts, like feeding cats or birds, must align with legal methods—such as using proper waste bins—to avoid harming the environment or community well-being.

Kuwait urges citizens and residents to comply with these regulations and report violations. This enforcement is part of broader efforts to promote environmental responsibility and sustainable practices, ensuring public spaces remain clean, safe, and legally protected for all.
