KUWAIT'S POPULATION DECLINE BY 2.2% FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 30 YEARS

Kuwait City: It is estimated that 253,000 people fled Kuwait between June 2020 and June 2021 due to the economic situation caused by the Covid crisis. The figures were released by the Kuwait Society for Human Rights. Among those who left the country were 205,000 people who worked in the private sector and their families. According to the Kuwaiti Human Rights Organization, 41,200 domestic workers and 7,000 public sector workers have left Kuwait.


For the second year in a row, the total number of expatriates in Kuwait has decreased. For the first time in 30 years, Kuwait's population is declining by 2.2 percent. As of June 30 this year alone, the population had fallen 0.9 percent to 4.62 million. This was mainly due to a 1.8 per cent decline in the number of residents. The number of expatriates in Kuwait has dropped from 70 percent of the population to 68.2 percent a year ago. As of June 30 this year, there were a total of 420,000 workers in Kuwait. Of these, 420,000 were Kuwaitis. In addition, there were 639,000 domestic workers.

Indians are more likely to work in the private sector and in the domestic sector. As of June 30, an estimated 302,000 Indians were employed in the domestic sector. The latter are from the Philippines and Sri Lanka.
