Texas Floods Kill 51, Search Continues for Missing Camp Children

Kerrville: The devastating Texas floods have now claimed at least 51 lives, with Kerr County suffering the heaviest toll. Officials confirmed that 43 people died in Kerr County alone, and 27 children remain missing from Camp Mystic, a beloved Christian summer camp on the banks of the Guadalupe River.

The tragedy unfolded when the river surged over 26 feet (8 meters) in under an hour, sweeping away cabins, vehicles and entire roads as families celebrated the Independence Day weekend. Rescue teams have saved more than 850 people so far, but search operations are ongoing for the missing children, many of whom are under 12.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has expanded the state’s disaster declaration, pledging that the mission remains a search and rescue. US President Donald Trump promised federal support, calling the disaster shocking and tragic. The National Weather Service has warned of more rain, adding to the challenge for rescue teams.

Heartbreaking stories have emerged from the community — local churches like Notre Dame Catholic Church are planning special services to honor victims such as sisters Blair and Brooke Harber, aged 13 and 11. Meanwhile, families who survived are returning to homes destroyed by the powerful floodwaters, finding few possessions left.

Helicopters, drones and boats continue to patrol the Guadalupe River, as rescuers vow to leave no one behind amid the worst floods the region has seen in decades.
