THE COST OF DOMESTIC EMPLOYEES IS RISING, PUTTING KUWAITI FAMILIES IN A BIND

Kuwait City: Prior to the COVID-19 outbreak, the month of Ramadan was a source of stress for Kuwaiti households due to a lack of domestic employees and the existence of extra labour during the holy month. The epidemic soon arrived, intensifying the agony and becoming a serious issue for Kuwaiti households with the growth of a disturbing and unlawful phenomena known as "temporary domestic workers," the majority of whom are lawbreakers and runaways from their sponsors' homes.

Perhaps what increased the burden for Kuwaiti housewives is the high cost of recruiting a domestic worker. It reaches up to KD 1,200, despite the decisions that set it at a limit of KD 900. This was blamed on recruitment agencies and their exaggeration in costs, in addition to other reasons that made a permanent domestic worker a rare commodity.
