Kuwait City:  The Ministry of Commerce has decided to tighten controls on labor recruitment agencies in view of the shortage of domestic workers in the country and the widespread use of illegal temporary workers. The ministry has been intervening in the wake of increasing complaints that these offices are operating by exploiting the situation. Recruitment agencies are working to prevent temporary workers from running away from their sponsors, as well as trying to increase the cost of labor recruitment.

Yesterday, the Commercial Control Division of the Ministry of Commerce inspected the domestic labor offices in the Haveli area. The inspection was carried out to ascertain whether the Labor Offices were charging for recruitment as per the directives of the Ministry. The Ministry of Commerce has directed that the recruitment cost should not exceed 890 dinars.

Ahmed al-Issa, head of the emergency team at the Ministry of Commerce, said any complaint that this condition was not complied with would be dealt with expeditiously. He added that stern action, including closure of offices and revocation of licenses, would be taken against labor offices that violate the law.
