PROPOSALS TO AMEND THE RESIDENCY LAW - 5 YEAR LIMIT – ARE REVIEWED BY A COMMITTEE.

Kuwait City: The government's proposal to change the Foreigners Residency Law was considered by the parliamentary Interior and Defense Affairs Committee on Thursday. The proposal was approved by the committee, according to committee chairman MP Saadoun Hammad, and it will be referred to the Assembly for voting.


The following are the key sections of the bill: 

1. Set a maximum residency length of five years for expats; as a result, they must leave the nation after this time or if their residency renewal application is denied.

2. For foreign investors, the maximum residency length is 15 years.

3. The maximum residency time for offspring of Kuwaiti women who marry non-Kuwaitis, as well as real estate property owners, is ten years.

4. The maximum duration of a family visit visa has been increased from three to one year. 

5. The daily penalties for staying in the nation after your residency permit has expired has been raised from KD 2 to KD 4 per day.

6. Sponsors or employers are responsible for the costs of expatriate worker expulsion.

7. In the public interest, to safeguard national security, and for moral considerations, the minister of the interior has the authority to deport expatriates.
