THE TRANSFER OF TRAINED EXPATRIATES SHOULD BE PREVENTED, KUWAITI MP WITH PROPOSAL

Kuwait City: MP Abdullah al-Turaiji has called for a comprehensive plan to prevent well-trained expatriate workers, including domestic workers, from abandoning their original sponsors and hiring another employer. He said in a proposal submitted to the Home Ministry that a decision on the matter should be taken soon in coordination with the concerned authorities.

A lot of money and time is spent training real sponsor workers. These workers then move on to another sponsor or employer after gaining a wealth of experience. This change is usually due to the promise of higher salaries. This is the case for all categories of expatriate workers, including lawyers, technicians and domestic workers.

The MP suggested that an expatriate worker should be allowed to switch to another sponsor only if he leaves the country. He also suggested that a new visa be issued only after staying abroad for five years. Al-Thuraiji also demanded that the relevant laws be amended to protect the rights of employers and to ensure the protection of workers in accordance with the Kuwaiti Constitution and international law.
