DAY 1 OF THE MULLET FISHING SEASON YIELDED A DISAPPOINTING CATCH

Kuwait City: Mullet fish (meed) fans rejoiced at the return of mullet fish to the market after a long wait, with the commencement of the fishing season from June 1 to November 30.

However, the Sharq fish market was devoid of mullet fish, with only a few shops displaying modest numbers, raising the price to KD 3.5 per kilogramme.

Dhaher Al-Suwayan, head of the Kuwait Fishermen Union, ascribed the little quantity of mullet fish that arrived at the market to the low number of fishing boats working, which did not surpass eight until the conclusion of the first day.

He explained that the Public Body for Agricultural Affairs and Fish Resources' decision to allow mullet fishing beginning June 1 surprised everyone, especially since the authority had previously stated that mullet fishing would be prohibited before July 1. Due to a lack of fisherman and an inability to meet the needs of the local market, the labour market became perplexed.

In a press statement, Al-Suwayan said, “The quantities of caught mullet fish were very less, not exceeding 20 kilograms, on the first day. This increased the price of one kilogram of mullet to KD 3.5. This is definitely an exaggerated price but it is due to the lack of supply”.
