IN THE FIRST HALF OF '22, KUWAIT MADE 392.94 MILLION ONLINE PURCHASES, WITHDRAWALS, AND PAYMENTS

Kuwait City: According to official data, citizens and residents made approximately 392.94 million payments and withdrew cash during the first six months of 2022, a 37.5% increase, including 107.14 million transactions, compared to the same period in 2021, when the number of payments and withdrawals of funds was approximately 285.8 million.


From January to the end of June 2022, cash transactions at ATMs accounted for 11% of total transactions by citizens and residents, while online payments accounted for about 28%. Direct payments through points of sale (PoS) accounted for approximately 61% of total transactions during the same period. 

Credit card payments at points of sale (direct purchases) accounted for 61% of total payments from January to June 2022, including approximately 240 million direct purchases, including 226.9 million purchases within Kuwait and 13.13 million credit card purchases at points of sale abroad. 

From January to the end of March 2022, spending transactions at points of sale totaled 118.748 million, with 112.1 million occurring within Kuwait and 6.64 million occurring abroad, while from April to the end of June 2022, the number of transactions increased to 121.32 million direct purchases, with 114.8 million occurring within Kuwait and 6.49 million occurring abroad. In comparison, the number of purchases made through points of sale by citizens and residents increased by 48% during the first half of 2022, with a total value of 77.74 million purchases, compared to 162.3 million transactions made during the same period in 2021. 

The number of ATM transactions (cash) accounted for approximately 11% of the transactions made by citizens and residents using their bank cards, with a rate of 43.12 million transactions out of 392.94 million transactions made between January and the end of June 2022, and cash withdrawals from within Kuwait accounted for the remainder. In 6 months, 41.74 million transactions were completed, while 1.38 million withdrawals were made from ATMs located outside of Kuwait. 

According to the data, the number of cash transactions decreased during the second quarter of 2022, reaching 21.66 million transactions from January to the end of March 2022, including 20.94 million transactions within Kuwait and 726,000 transactions abroad, while the number of transactions decreased from April to the end of June 2022, reaching 21.46 million transactions, including 20.8 transactions within Kuwait and 655 thousand transactions abroad.
