AUSTRALIA FLOODS, FOLLOWING HEAVY RAIN, EVACUATION ORDERS ISSUED IN THREE STATES

  • 14/10/2022

Communities in three Australian states have been ordered to leave because of the severe flooding brought on by the torrential rain. In just one day, some areas of the nation have experienced rainfall that is more than three times the national average for October.

As the disaster worsens, at least 500 homes have been inundated, one person has died, and another is missing. More than 20 people have died this year as a result of widespread flooding in Australia that was caused by the La Nia weather pattern.

This week, Victoria, the second-most populous state in Australia, has taken the biggest hit. A number of communities, including some in the state capital Melbourne, have been told to evacuate.

Roads have been inundated, schools have had to close, and 3,000 homes and businesses have lost power due to floods. In the upcoming weeks, more rain is expected, which will put additional strain on already swollen rivers and saturated ground.

The town of Seymour, which is located north of Melbourne, has received 155mm in 24 hours, which is about a quarter of the annual average rainfall in London and three times the town's October rainfall.

Several rivers in Tasmania have overflowed after receiving up to 400mm of rain in some areas in a single day. The number of affected residences and businesses is unknown.
