Storm Floris Triggers Travel Chaos Across Northern UK with 85mph Winds

  • 04/08/2025

Storm Floris is wreaking havoc across northern parts of the UK, particularly in Scotland, where wind speeds are reaching up to 85mph (137km/h). The Met Office issued a yellow warning for much of the north, later upgraded to an amber alert for large areas of Scotland from 10 am to 10 pm on August 4.

Transport networks have been hit hard. Train operators LNER and Avanti West Coast are urging passengers not to travel north of Newcastle and Preston, while Network Rail has closed several lines from noon on August 4, including key routes through Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee, Inverness, and Fife. Other routes are running reduced services with extended travel times.

Ferry operator CalMac has also cancelled multiple sailings in advance of the storm, and road and air travel face major disruptions due to bridge closures, delays, and cancellations.

Scotland’s western coastal regions are expected to bear the brunt of the storm, although northern England, Wales, and Northern Ireland are also affected. Inland wind gusts are expected to reach 40–50mph, while higher and exposed areas may see 60–70mph, according to Met Office Chief Meteorologist Matthew Lehnert.

Storm Floris is also impacting outdoor events, including Edinburgh’s summer festivals, as heavy rain adds to the disruption. While winds are forecast to ease in the west by late August 4, they will persist in the east into the morning of August 5.

This is the sixth named storm of the 2024–25 UK storm season, following Storm Éowyn in January.
