Jim Lovell, the celebrated NASA astronaut who commanded the fateful Apollo 13 mission, passed away at the age of 97. A veteran of four spaceflights — Gemini 7, Gemini 12, Apollo 8, and Apollo 13 — Lovell was admired for his exceptional skill, leadership, and calm under pressure.

Lovell’s most famous mission, Apollo 13, was intended to make him the fifth man to walk on the Moon. Instead, an oxygen tank explosion nearly 200,000 miles from Earth forced the crew into a tense four-day survival in the lunar module. Working closely with engineers on the ground, Lovell and his crew’s safe return became a defining example of NASA’s ingenuity and teamwork.

NASA paid tribute to Lovell’s inspiring life, calling him a pioneer whose courage helped shape the path to the Moon and beyond. His story entered popular culture through the 1995 film Apollo 13, in which Tom Hanks portrayed him, cementing his place as an enduring symbol of space exploration’s triumph over adversity.
