At least 13 people were killed in a bar fire in the Russian city of Kostroma. According to Russian media, the incident may have started when a drunk customer at the nightclub fired a flare gun on the dance floor.

According to reports, the fire started when parts of the lighting rig on the ceiling caught fire, quickly filling the room with smoke. It took several hours to put out the fire. A suspect, said to be a local, has been apprehended.

The fire, which started around 02:00 local time (23:00 GMT) in Kostroma, 300 kilometres (180 miles) northeast of Moscow, took several hours to extinguish.

According to Russian media, the fire may have started when a drunk man fired a flare gun on the dance floor.

"He was with a woman, ordering flowers for her while holding a flare gun. He then proceeded to the dance floor and fired it "a source in law enforcement told Russia's state news agency Tass.

Other Russian media reported that 15 people had died and another 49 needed medical attention, though authorities have not confirmed this.

Although the exact number of people inside the club at the time is unknown, 250 people were able to flee.
