China: For the first time since a widespread famine in 1961, China's population fell by 8,50,000 in 2022, signaling a significant demographic shift for the second-largest economy in the world. The population of the country was estimated at 1.411 billion as of the end of 2022 by the National Bureau of Statistics in Beijing on January 17.

In 2023, India will surpass China as the world's most populous country, predicts a U.N. report from the previous year.9.56 million babies were born in China in 2018, a decrease of more than 10% from 2021. If Mao Zedong's failed "Great Leap Forward" campaign resulted in a devastating famine that caused the last population decline to occur six decades ago, the current trends in China's population reflect shifting social values as families choose to have fewer children.
