At a zoo in Costa Rica, the first incident of a crocodile getting pregnant on her own has been discovered. She gave birth to a child who shared 99.9% of her genetic makeup. There have been cases of so-called "virgin birth" in some bird, fish, and reptile species, but never in crocodiles. The characteristic may have come from an evolutionary ancestor, according to the researchers.
