Residents and rescue personnel in Derna, a city ravaged by a devastating flood, are struggling to manage the thousands of bodies that have washed up or are rotting beneath the debris. The disaster, which saw buildings destroyed and hundreds of people stranded at sea, has left the city in ruins.

On Tuesday, WHO and other aid organizations called on Libyan authorities to cease the practice of mass graves being used to bury flood victims, claiming that this practice could lead to long-term psychological distress for families or create health risks for those living near the water.
